Phil, I assume you are using POP email, and if so gmail uses a non standard port for email sending. Some ISP’s block port 25 to prevent anyone from sending mail through their server from the internet to help stop spam. Gmail requires a secure authentication to send, thus eliminating spam that way, and they use a different port to avoid the common port 25 block.
Gmail has ALWAYS been able to send no matter what net connection we use, and has the added advantage if it is set up right of encrypting the mail you receive. Thus, no wifi site can read the mail gmail sends to you . Gmail is now our main email address.
